Abstract

Method for treating finished garments, cloths and yarns made of wool, comprising a chemical treatment stage and a mechanical treatment stage in combination, in which the chemical treatment stage involves wetting the finished garment, cloth or yarn first with a reducing solution and then with an oxidizing solution, and the mechanical treatment stage involves stretching the finished garment, cloth or yarn. The treatment prevents shrinking and/or felting, and is capable of restoring the dimensions and surface characteristics of the shrunk and/or felted woollen garment.

Description

"Method for treating finished garments, cloths and yarns made of wool"
Background of the invention
The present invention relates generally to the treatment of woollen products such as finished garments, cloths and yarns.
Woollen fibres are notorious for undergoing shrinkage and felting caused by incorrect or excessive treatments such as mechanical manipulation (vigorous washing, wringing, etc.) and high temperatures. State of the prior art
In an attempt to overcome this problem, it has been proposed to pretreat woollen yarns or fabrics first with stabilizing agents: for example, Japanese patent applications JP-A-04163369 and JP-A-03249271 include the use of cysteine, or derivatives thereof, for this purpose.
However, the treatments hitherto proposed in attempting to provide a nonshrink finished woollen product give results that are modest on the whole. Moreover, at the present time, no treatment appears ever to have been proposed which would make it possible to restore, at least to a large extent, the original condition of a finished woollen garment. The invention One aim of the invention is thus to produce a method for treating finished garments, cloths and yarns made of wool which is suitable as a preventive measure for avoiding, or at least substantially reducing, their subsequent shrinkage and felting, even after repeated washing.
A further aim of the invention is to produce a treatment method which makes it possible to regenerate, in terms of dimensions and surface nature, a shrunk and/or felted woollen garment, i.e. to substantially restore the original size and softness of the garment. According to the invention, these aims are achieved by means of a method which is characterized in that it comprises a chemical treatment stage and a mechanical treatment stage in combination, in which the chemical treatment stage involves wetting the finished woollen garment, cloth or yarn first with a reducing solution and then with an oxidizing solution, and the • mechanical treatment stage involves stretching the finished woollen garment, cloth or yarn. The mechanical treatment stage also includes a gentle brushing action.
The reducing solution appropriately includes at least one component chosen from the following group: thioglycolic acid and salts thereof, - thiolactic acid and salts thereof, sulphur-containing a ino acids and salts thereof, thiourea, cystamine, - cysteamine.
The components listed above can be used in pure or dilute form, alone or mixed with one or more of the other components .
According to the invention, the oxidizing solution includes at least one component chosen from the following group: alkalis, hydrogen peroxide, borates, - bromates, ammonia.
The components listed above can also be used in pure or dilute form, alone or mixed with one or more of the other components. The abovementioned solutions can be applied by spraying or by immersing the woollen article to be treated.
The mechanical treatment consists, as stated, in stretching or tensioning the garment, cloth or yarn, using suitable manual, electrical, pneumatic, etc. equipment. The stretching action must be capable of pulling tight the treated woollen article in the desired direction (s) . For example, when the finished woollen garment to be treated consists of a pullover or the like, the equipment may comprise a suitable expandable and extendable model whose shape matches that of the garment fitted on it. The garment thus placed on the model may also be suitably subjected to gentle brushing, preferably with soft brush bristles, carried out manually or automatically.
The method according to the invention can be carried out in three process variants: Process A: 1 - immerse the object in solution A, which is usually dilute, for a suitable period, usually of about a few minutes;
2 - place it on a model and subject it to tension; 3 - brush it gently;
4 - spray with solution B, which is normally dilute;
5 - wash thoroughly with water;
6 - place to dry. Process B:
1 - place the dry object on a model;
2 - sprinkle the object with solution A, which is normally dilute;
3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - as in process A. Process C:
1 - 2 - as in process B;
3 - as in process A;
4 - remove the object from the model;
5 - immerse it in solution B, which is normally dilute;
6 - wash thoroughly with water;
7 - place to dry.
As a result of experimental tests carried out by the Applicant, it has been shown that, as a consequence of the treatment according to the invention, shrunken and felted garments almost entirely regain their original dimensions, and, in addition, an appreciable increase in their softness or gentleness is objectively noticeable.
The treated products revealed a tendency to resist the negative effects caused by further subsequent washes.
In addition, the tests carried out showed no signs of colour-impairing changes.
For the purposes of illustration, six experiments were carried out on six woollen products, as described below:
1 - 100% woollen fabric yarn count: 2/64 in weft
2/64 in warp 23 weft yarns/cm 36 warp yarns/cm
2 - 100% woollen fabric yarn count: 1/32 in weft
2/56 in warp 26 weft yarns/cm 35 warp yarns/cm
3 - 100% extrafine merino wool pullover Nm 2/3 structure: 1/1 rib
4 - extrafine Wool super 90 75/25 merino/angora wool pullover
Nm 2/16 yarn count/connect: 62.5 tex structure: satin-stitch
5 - 75/25 merino/angora woollen pullover
Nm 1/16 structure 4/4 rib 6 - ROYAL COMPANY® wool v-neck pullover, 100% wool structure satin-stich
The first five garments mentioned above were each divided into three portions:
A - in its present untreated, non-felted state B - subjected to two full washing cycles at 60°C in a washing machine (AEG-OKO. LAVAMAT 505 NE) and then treated
C - subjected to two full washing cycles at 60°C in a washing machine and not treated.
The sixth garment was subjected to treatment after washing at 30°C in a washing machine.
The products which underwent the treatment were sprayed with solution A consisting of ammonium thio- glycolate as an aqueous 10% solution, and were then subjected to stretching.
On reaching the desired dimensions, the garments were brushed gently, washed with a jet of warm water and then sprayed with solution B, consisting of 30% aqueous ammonia.
Finally, after rinsing, the garments were carefully laid out horizontally to dry.
The results obtained are given in the table below.

Substantial restoration of the original softness, without impairment of the colours, was found for these articles.
