Abstract

Oxidising residues are removed from protein fibres, e.g. woll and hair, after treatment with hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, sodium perborate, potassium persulphate, sodium percarbonate or sodium perphosphate by treating them with a chlorite-free reagent containing an a -carbonyl carboxylic acid having the formula R-CO-COOH in which R is an alkyl radical or a hydrogen atom or a salt thereof, e.g. pyruvic or glyosylic acid. The treating composition may have an acid or alkaline pH value and may be an aqueous, alcoholic or water-alcohol composition. The composition may also contain a perfume, amonia, tartaric acid, lauryl pyridinium chloride, sodium sulphate or polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The process is applicable to the treatment of hair waved by treatment with thioglycollate solutions and hydrogen peroxide to the treatment of hair dyed with oxidation dyestuffs, to the treatment of hair after bleaching prior to dyeing, to the setting of hair and to the after treatment of bleached wool.ALSO:A composition suitable for use in the treatment of hair to remove oxidising residues therefrom comprises an a -carbonyl carboxylic acid of the formula R,CO,COOH in which R is an alkyl radical or a hydrogen atom or a salt thereof, e.g. pyruvic or glyoxylic acid, and a perfume oil or dry perfume. The composition may be applied to the hair as an aqueous, alcoholic or water-alcohol composition after bleaching, waving or dyeing with oxidation dyestuffs involving the use of hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, sodium perborate, potassium persulphate, sodium percarbonate or sodium perphosphate. The composition may be applied in the form of a setting agent comprising polyvinyl pyrrolidone, the sodium salt of pyruvic acid, tartaric acid, isopropyl alcohol, perfume oil and water.
