Abstract

1429087 Hair setting PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 2 Oct 1973 [2 Oct 1972] 45975/ 73 Heading DIP A process for deforming hair which has been subjected to oxidising conditions, comprises contacting the hair with an aqueous solution containing at least 1% by weight of a chelating agent for metal ions and having a pH from 5 to 10, subjecting the moist hair to a longitudinal stress and thereafter drying the hair in the stressed configuration. The preferred chelating agents are alkali metal salts of nitrilo triacetic acid, ethylene diaimine tetracetic acid and mellitic acid. The chelator solution is preferably in contact with the hair for one to 30 minutes. The previous oxidation of the hair is preferably effected by the process of Specification 1429086, as is the subsequent application of the longitudinal stress. Alternatively the oxidation may be by sunlight or hydrogen peroxide. The chelating agent solution may be used as a rinse after shampooing the hair with an oxidant containing Shampoo. Compositions may be provided in kit form which comprise an individually packaged portion of an aqueous non-cationic shampoo composition, an individually packaged portion of a monopersulphate oxidant in an amount of at least 1% by weight of the shampoo, and an individually packaged portion of the chelating agent either in dry form or as an aqueous solution. The non-cationic shampoo may contain anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric detergents, e.g. alkyl (10-18C) benzene sulphates and sulphonates, alkyl (9-21C) glycerol ether sulphates and sulphonates, alkylated polyoxyethylenes and N-alkyl sarcosinates, and soaps. A buffer, e.g. carbonate-bicarbonate may maintain the shampoo pH in the preferred range of 7 to 9.5. Further components of the composition include thickeners such as carboxymethyl cellulose, silica gel and high molecular weight polyoxyethylenes. The process may be carried out at room temperatures or at elevated temperatures up to 150‹F.
