Abstract

Keratinous fibres, e.g. wool, fur or especially human hair, are dyed by a process which comprises reducing some of the disulphide linkages of the cystine in the fibres to -SH groups while breaking hydrogen bonds by applying a suitable reducing agent, a hydrogen bond breaker for keratinous fibres and an aqueous solution of a water-soluble reactive dye. The preferred dyestuffs contain vinyl sulphone, mono- and di-chlorotriazine or trichloropyrimidine groups (many listed). The specified reducing agents are thioglycollic acid (preferred), thiolactic acid thioglycerol, mercaptopropionic acid, sodium bisulphite, ammonium bisulphide, zinc or sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, sodium metabisulphite, potassium borohydride and hydroquinone and the specified hydrogen bond breakers are lithium bromide, urea, a mixture of lithium bromide and urea or resorcinol, catechol, dihydroxyacetone, formamide, potassium chloride and magnesium chloride. The reducing agent and the hydrogen bond breaker may be applied before or together with the reactive dyestuff solution. In the case of the former a rinsing step may be included before the dyestuff solution is applied. The aqueous compositions of the parent invention are usually of slightly alkaline reaction which may be achieved by the addition of ammonium hydroxide. The compositions may also include the detergents: alkyl aryl sulphonates, sodium lauryl sulphate, triethanolamine lauryl sulphate, triethanolamine lauryl ether sulphate, alkanolamide fatty acid esters, polyoxyethylene fatty alcohol, polyhydric alcohol fatty acid esters, nonyephenoxy polyoxyethylene alcohols, soluble amine fatty acid soaps or soluble metallic fatty acid soaps as well as perfumes of the thickeners: guar, acacia and arabic gums, gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol, ethyl or methyl cellulose derivatives or alkylarylphenoxyethylene oxide condensates. The present process may also be used for simultaneously "permanent waving" and dyeing human hair by employing known techniques combined with the present process. Examples are given.
