Abstract

Hair dyeing compositions which are free of reducing agents capable of reacting with the hair comprise an acid dyestuff, a water-soluble salt of a monovalent or divalent cation, the ratio dye: salt being 1:1 to 1:20, 000 by weight, and a free base in an amount sufficient to produce a pH of 8.5 - 12.5 in an aqueous solution containing the composition, and may optionally contain 20-400% of the total weight of dye and salt of a non-dyeing organic substance which is immiscible with water and when mixed in the ratio 4 parts by weight of organic substance to 10 parts aqueous solution containing the above composition and allowed to stand for 3 hours at 25 DEG C. will extract a portion only of the dyestuff from the aqueous phase, and may also contain a bleaching agent, e.g. hydrogen peroxide. The specified mono- and di-valent cations are those of the alkali and alkaline earth metals, ammonia, alkylamines having 1-4 carbon atoms and mono-, di- and tri-alkanolamines in which each alkanol group contains 2 or 3 carbon atoms and the specified anious are chlorides, bromides, sulphates, acetates, borates, nitrates, citrates, lactates, bromates and chlorates. Specified free bases are ammonia, monoethanolamine, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and 2-amino-2-methyl-1, 3-propanediol. The non-dyeing organic substance is preferably an alcohol, those specified being n-butyl, n-amyl, n-octyl, benzyl, terephthalyl and phenylethyl alcohol but may also be cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, chlorobenzene, camphor, xylene or toluene. When the composition is in the form of a dry powder it may further contain corn starch or white dextrin and when in the form of an aqueous solution it may contain a thickener and be in the form of a paste or cream as well as containing perfumes, stabilisers and opacifiers. The specified thickeners are ethoxylated fatty alcohols, carboxylated vinyl polymers and ethoxylated tallow alcohols. In the combined dyeing-bleaching composition provided in solid form both the bleaching agent and the free base may be included in solid form however when the composition is provided as an aqueous solution the bleaching agent and the free base must be kept separate. The specified bleaching agents are hydrogen peroxide, sodium percarbonate and urea peroxide. Examples are given.
