Abstract

The hair dyeing composition of the parent Specification comprising an aqueous solution or dispersion of a coloured substance having an affinity for human hair and a water-insoluble or slightly water-soluble organic solvent in which, at the temperature of dyeing, the coloured substance is more soluble than in water, is modified in one or more of the following respects:- (a) a water-soluble anionic dyestuff is employed as the coloured substance and the composition also contains, in an amount not exceeding 1 gram per litre, a cationic surface-active agent, e.g., octadecyl pyridinium bromide, which forms with the dyestuff a sparingly water-soluble anionic-cationic complex. (b) the composition also contains up to 5% by volume of glycerol isopropylidene ether, and the pH is maintained above 7 by the addition of, for example, borax. (c) the composition also contains not more than 12% by weight of a detergent, e.g., 2-ethoxy-sodium lauryl sulphate ether. (d) the composition also contains a thickener.
