551,369. Soaps; toilet preparations. WALSH, C. L., and NEWMAN, A. A. June 11, 1940, No. 10171. [Class 91] [Also in Group VI] Soaps, cosmetics, tooth pastes, hair creams and like preparations have incorporated in them up to 10 per cent. by weight of the gelatinous material obtained by alkaline extraction of the fleshy growth of Agaves and plants of kindred families such as Phormium Tenax and embracing Aloe, Henequen and Sanseviera and in some cases the roots and boles of such plant (see, for example, Specifications 517,729, 532,877 and 539,620, [all in Group V]. The material serves as a filler and stabilizer and acts as a watersoftening, emulsifying, and skin-softening agent. According to examples, a soap composition is mixed with 15 to 25 per cent. of a strong (6 to 10 per cent.) solution of the potassium salt of the extract of sisal plant flesh with potassium bicarbonate at temperatures below 50‹ C.; toothpaste is ,prepared with 1 to 3 per cent. of a weak (2 to 5 per cent.) solution of the same potassium salt; face cream is admixed with 5 to 10 per cent. of the sodium salt in strong solution. A colloid of stronger gelling power may be obtained by alkaline extraction at temperatures above 50‹ C., and the material may also be prepared as a hard gel or dry powder capable of yielding viscous solutions with water. Such a gel mixed with 20 times its weight of soft water may be used as a vehicle for almond oil and as an ingredient in cold creams, and other cosmetics.
