Abstract

A detergent composition for use in the treatment of hair comprises a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and a liquid ammonium soap to which has been added a dry powder comprising a persulphate salt of a cation selected from alkali metals and ammonium, and an anhydrous alkali metal silicate, the silicate and persulphate salts being present in a weight ratio range of 1 : 4 to 1 : 7 and forming upon wetting with the liquids a gel in the pH range of from 9.3 to not more than 10. The liquid ammonium soap may be produced by the reaction of ammonium hydroxide and oleic, myristic, palmitic, lauric or stearic acid. Ammonium or potassium persulphate or a mixture thereof preferably containing approximately three parts by weight of potassium persulphate to one part of ammonium persulphate is preferably used. The composition may also contain wetting agents, e.g. isopropyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate, the dioctyl ester of sodium sulpho-succinic acid, alkyl aryl sodium sulphonates, sodium lauryl sulphate, nonylphenoxypoly (ethyleneoxy) ethanol and polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, dyes, chelating agents, e.g. N,N-di(2-hydroxy ethyl) glycine monosodium salt, perfumes and alcohol. The solid and liquid components of the composition may be packaged separately.ALSO:A dry powder for admixture with hydrogen peroxide and a liquid ammonium soap to form a hair bleach of gelatinous consistency comprises a persulphate salt of a cation selected from alkali metals and ammonium, and an anhydrous alkali metal silicate, the silicate and persulphate salts being present in a weight ratio range of 1:4 to 1:7 and forming upon wetting with both of the liquids a gel in the pH range of from 9.3 to not more than 10. The liquid ammonium soap may be produced by the reaction of ammonium hydroxide and oleic, myristic, palmitic, lauric or stearic acid. Ammonium or potassium persulphate or a mixture thereof preferably containing approximately three parts by weight of potassium persulphate to one part of ammonium persulphate is preferably used. The treating composition may also contain wetting agents, e.g. isopropyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate, the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid, alkyl aryl sodium sulphonates, sodium lauryl sulphate, nonylphenoxypoly (ethyleneoxy) ethanol and polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, dyes, chelating agents, e.g. N,N - di(2 - hydroxyethyl)glycine monosodium salt, perfumes and alcohol. The bleaching composition may be used for touch up purposes in bleaching new hair growth close to the scalp or for a total bleach and may be removed from the hair after the necessary bleaching process by the addition of water. The liquid and solid components may be packaged separately.
