Abstract
A mixed sodium/amine salt of polyacrylic acid is prepared by dissolving polyacrylic acid in warm water, adding aqueous sodium hydroxide and then an amine of the formula <FORM:1011557/C3/1> where R represents the C12-C14 aliphatic hydrocarbon moieties present in coconut oil and the sum of x and y is 15. The product is used as an emulsifier in compositions for dry-shaving (see Division A5).ALSO:An aqueous emulsion preparation for application to the skin preparatory to dry shaving comprises 5 to 20 weight percent of a fatty acid alkyl ester in a major proportion of water, the alkyl, radical of said ester containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the fatty acid moiety 12 to 18 carbon atoms, and 0.1 to 1.0 weight percent of an emulsifying agent which is mixed alkalic metal/amine salt of polyacrylic acid, said amine having the formula <FORM:1011557/A5-A6/1> wherein R represents and aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 12 to 18 carbon atoms and the sum of x and y is from 10 to 15. Preferred fatty acid esters are isopropyl myristate and isopropyl palmitate. In the above formula, R may be lauryl or the C12-14 aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals present in coconut oil. Optional ingredients may be present; e.g. preservatives, perfumes and colouring agents.
