Abstract

The invention comprises salts of sulphosuccinic half esters, having the formula <FORM:1077470/C2/1> in which R represents a C8- 20 alkyl group, A is either -CO-NR1- (where R1 is hydrogen, a hydroxyalkyl or an alkyl group) or the group -CH2-O-; m is an integer of 1-3, n is an integer of 0-10; either X or X1 is hydrogen and the other is SO3M and M represents one equivalent of a Group II or III metal, e.g. zinc, magnesium and aluminium. The compounds are prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with a compound of formula R-A-[(CH2)mO]nH to form a maleic acid half ester which is sulphonated by a Group II or III metal sulphite. Specified compounds are the zinc salt of the sulphosuccinic acid half-ester of undecylenic acid monoethanolamide, and the magnesium, zinc and aluminium salts of the sulphosuccinic half-ester of lauryl alcohol diglycol ether. The compounds are useful in cosmetic preparations (see Division A5).ALSO:Topical and other cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparations, including hair and bath preparations, skin creams, liquid cleansing and washing agents, have incorporated therein a salt of formula:- <FORM:1077470/A5-A6/1> wherein R is an alkyl group (C8-20), A is either -CO-NR1 (where R1 is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyalkyl or an alkyl group) or the group -Cn2-O-; m is from 1-3, and n is from 0-10; either X or X1 is a hydrogen atom and the other is the group -SO3M and M represents one equivalent of a Group II or III metal. The preparations may be aqueous-or alcohol-based.
