Abstract
1,272,922. Organic sulphated surfactants. L'OREAL. 13 Jan., 1970 [13 Jan., 1969], No. 1719/70. Addition to 1,107,441. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Novel compounds of the formula or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof or a salt of an ion of the formula wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radicals of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R is either (i) a branched or unbranched alkyl or alkenyl radical of 21 to 26 carbon atoms, (ii) a radical of the formula wherein n is a number from 14 to 17, (iii) a radical of the formula wherein n is a number from 12 to 16, (iv) a radical of the formula wherein n is 7 or 8, or (v) a pelangonyl or undecyl radical, and novel salts derived from an ion of the formula in which R is an alkyl or alkenyl radical of 8 to 20 carbon atoms, and an ion of the formula as mentioned above with the proviso that the total number of carbon atoms in R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is greater than 4, are prepared by reacting an acid of the formula RCOOH with diglycolamine, sulphating the alcohol function of the resulting amide and, if necessary, salifying the product. In the novel salts, R is suitably an aliphatic radical derived from the fatty acids of copra or tallow. In the preparation the alcohol function is suitably sulphated with sulphamic acid and the amide sulphate reacted with magnesia. Examples describe the preparation of magnesium di(dodecanoylaminoethoxyethyl) sulphate, the magnesium sulphate of talloyl- and coproylaminoethoxyethanol where "talloyl" and "coproyl" are the acyl radicals derived from the fatty acids of tallow and copra respectively. The novel compounds or salts may form constituents in a cosmetic composition suitable for use as a hair shampoo.
