Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (X is H, alkali metal or amine residue; formula II is alkyl residue of 12-hydroxystearic or ricinoleic acid;n is integer >=0). EXAMPLE:An oligoester of 12-hydroxystearic acid. USE:A light-colored and ordorless oily base for cosmetics, having a superior compatibility with other oily bases, superior affinity and touch to the skin, and water retaining effects, and giving no irritant action to the skin. PROCESS:The hydroxyl group and carboxyl group of 12-hydroxystearic or ricinoleic acid are subjected to the intermolecular esterification, and the resultant product is, if necessary, converted in to an alkali metallic or amine salt to impart the water- solutility thereto and give the compound of formula I. Furthermore, all or part of the unreacted carboxyl groups in the compound may be esterified with an aliphatic monohydric alcohol, if necessary.
