1528853 Beta-thio acrylic acid derivatives KAO SOAP CO Ltd 24 June 1976 [4 July 1975 7 July 1975 (2) 11 July 1975 (2)] 26353/76 Heading C2C Novel compounds of formula where R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-20 alkyl or alkenyl and X is (1) -OM where M is H or alkali metal, (2) -OR<SP>2</SP> where R<SP>2</SP> is C 1-20 alkyl or a radical obtained by removal of one OH group from a polyhydric alcohol in which one or more of the other OH groups may or may not be etherified, (3) -NR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP> where R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are H, C 1-20 alkyl or C 2-6 alkyl substituted by hydroxyl or a sulpho salt group, or (4) halogen, are prepared by reacting R<SP>1</SP>SH with acetylene mono-carboxylic acid in aqueous alkali metal hydroxide, to give R<SP>1</SP>SCH = CHCOO alkali metal, and converting this to the acid, ester, amide or halide by conventional methods. Compounds of the invention and the corresponding sulphoxides and sulphones have antimicrobial and surfactant activity.
