Abstract

Pyrrole-2-acetonitriles of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting a dialkyl(pyrrole-2-methyl)amine with a dialkyl sulphate to form the corresponding quaternary salt, and displacing the amine from the salt with aqueous alkali metal cyanide in the presence of a solvent which is immiscible with water but in which the pyrrole-2-acetonitrile is soluble.
