Abstract

1420523 Phthalimide salts STERLING- WINTHROP GROUP Ltd 12 March 1974 [14 March 1973 21 June 1973] 12319 and 29631/73 Heading C2C A process for the production of an alkali metal salt of phthalimide comprises: (a) providing a slurry of finely divided phthalimide at a temperature up to 60‹ C. in an alkanol containing up to 4 carbon atoms in which the desired alkali metal salt of phthalimide is substantially insoluble and, (b) reacting the phthalimide slurry with an alkali metal hydroxide or alcoholate. The slurry is preferably prepared by spraying molten phthalimide into an excess of the alkanol, and the alkali metal hydroxide is added to the slurry in the form of a solution in the alcohol that is present in the slurry. When the sodium salt is prepared, ethanol is preferred as the alkanol and when potassium is prepared methanol is preferred.
