Abstract
Wool is shrink-proofed by treating it with an aqueous medium containing a salt of diaminomethane disulphinic acid of the formula <FORM:0885867/IV (c)/1> in which X is Na or N(R1)(R2)(R3)(R4), R1, R2, R3, and R4 being the same or different but each representing an alkyl radical having 1-18 carbon atoms, or of the formula <FORM:0885867/IV (c)/2> in which Y is an alkaline earth metal, and subsequently subjecting it to oxidation. Salts in which, in formula (a), R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each methyl, or in which, in formula (b) Y is calcium, are preferably used. The aqueous medium, which may be in the form of a solution, emulsion or suspension and may also contain wetting agents, emulsifiers or buffer agents, preferably contains up to 20% by weight of the salt and preferably has a pH, adjusted with trisodium phosphate, morpholine, triethanolamine or ammonia, of 7-10; it may be used at room temperature or at raised temperatures below 100 DEG C. After treatment with the aqueous medium the wool may be rinsed with water and then treated with an aqueous solution of an oxidising agent, preferably containing an acid, to reconstitute the keratin chains decomposed by reduction with the diamino methane disulphinic acid salt, or the wool may be exposed to aerial oxidation. The oxidising and neutralizing agents may be applied to the treated wool in separate steps. Fibres, yarns, fabrics or articles consisting of or containing wool may be treated.
