Abstract

A liquid detergent composition having an active matter concentration of at least 25% by weight comprises as active matter (a) 50-90% straight chain alkyl benzene sulphonate, preferably in the form of the alkali metal, ammonium or alkanolamine salt, wherein the alkyl group is derived from mono-olefins obtained in the thermal cracking of hydrocarbons, of which alkyl groups at least 90% contain 8-13 carbon atoms and the average chain length is 9-12 carbon atoms, (b) 5-30% of the condensate of 6-15 molar proportions of ethylene oxide with a C7- 12-alkyl phenol, and (c) 5-30% of the sulphate or sulphuric acid ester of the condensate of a C7- 12-alkyl phenol with 2-8 molar proportions of ethylene oxide, or of the condensate of an aliphatic alcohol having 8-20, preferably 12-18, carbon atoms with an average of 0.5-7 molar proportions of ethylene oxide, either being most suitably in the form of the sodium, potassium or ammonium salt. Suitable solvents are ethanol, isopropanol, glycerol, glycol and the monomethyl ether thereof, but is most preferably water. Up to 10% (by weight of the active matter) of such solubilizers as sodium xylene or toluene sulphonate, ethanol or urea may also be incorporated.
