Abstract

Xanthine derivatives of formula <FORM:1104328/C2/1> where R1 and R2 are alkyl, R3 is alkyl or aralkyl and R4 is hydrogen or alkyl are prepared by reacting a 5-nitrosouracil of formula <FORM:1104328/C2/2> with an alkylating or aralkylating agents such as an alkyl halide, dialkyl sulphate or diazoalkane. Caffeine, 8-methylcaffeine, 8-isopropylcaffeine, 7-isopropyltheophyllin and 7-benzyltheophyllin are prepared in examples.
