Abstract
A binder for mould forming compositions comprises an intimate mixture of 15-58% sodium silicate (having SiO2:Na2O ratio between 3.3:1 and 1.5:1), 2-25% potassium hydroxide and up to 25% of an organic polyhydroxy compound, the rest being water, arranged so that the total solid content is between 22 and 60%. The sodium silicate and potassium hydroxide are preferably mixed in solution. This binder is incorporated in a mould composition comprising 88-97% of a finely divided refractory material, 0.5 to 3% of ferrosilicon or other silicon containing material and 2.5-9% of the above binder. The composition is self-setting due to reaction between the binder and the silicon.
