Abstract
A mould made by the "lost wax" process or other refractory article is produced by subjecting to a temperature over 500 DEG C. a suspension of sillimanite in water mixed with a suspension of bentonite in alcohol. 10 lb. of sillimanite sand (30 mesh) is mixed with 2 litres of water and a mixture of 1 1/2 to 3 ozs. of bentonite with 200 c.c. of alcohol is added. This mixture is poured into a flask in which a wax pattern is mounted, the flask is agitated for 20 - 50 mins., surplus liquid is removed, and, after 2 hours air drying, the mould is removed from the flask, dried in air for 12 hours, and baked for say 3 hours. To make the mould, before baking, less friable, the mixture may contain 4 to 12 ozs. of bentonite and 4 to 12 of magnesium sulphate be added. In another modification the mixture contains 3.2 ozs. of bentonite and magnesium silicate is added or formed during the process by adding 5 ozs. of silica, 3 of boric acid, 2 of light magnesium oxide, and 1 of magnesium chloride.
