Abstract
676,621. Porous refractories. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST-GOBAIN, CHAUNCY & CIREY. Jan. 14, 1948 [Jan. 14, 1947], No. 1177/48. Class 70 Porous refractory products are obtained by preparing a collodial suspension of a material which will yield a refractory product and then causing simultaneously both the formation of gas bubbles and the setting of the suspension to a solid mass by flocculation. In a preferred embodiment a clay containing Al 2 O 3 +TiO 2 30-36 per cent, and SiO 2 50-58 per cent is made into a paste with water and a solution of caustic soda containing sodium silicate added. Powdered aluminium either dry or in the form of a paste is then added and the whole placed in a mould for 15-40 minutes at about 20‹C. The block is then air dried and baked either at 1000‹C. for one hour or at 1300-1450‹C. Chaocmotte, silica and felspar may be added to the clay before pressing. If the mould is made of a metal then the product has walls with open pores. If the mould is made from plaster, the walls have no openings.
