502,822. Refractory substances. ROSENTHAL - ISOLATOREN CES. Sept. 24, 1937, No. 26007. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1936. [Classes 22 and 70] The slag which is obtained when calcium phosphate is reduced to phosphorus with coke and sand in an electric furnace, is used in the production of compactly sintered ceramic masses, particularly shaped articles such as electric insulators. The so-called phosphorus slag, which consists mainly of calcium silicate, may be mixed with clay and chamotte and the mixture sintered. Alternatively, by sintering a mixture of phosphorus slag and such substances as corundum, aluminium silicates, or magnesium silicates, compactly sintered ceramic masses which consist of a single crystalline substance in the systems CaO.Al2O3.SiO2 or CaO.MgO.SiO2 may be produced. Thus, by sintering a mixture of phosphorus slag, chamotte, plastic clay and corundum, a mass consisting of anorthite may be produced, while by sintering a mixture of phosphorus slag and talc, a mass consisting of diopside may be produced. Fluorspar may be added to the mixture to be sintered in order to facilitate sintering, and sodium felspar may be added in order to attain a lower sintering temperature.
