Abstract
228,233. Vershofen, W. Oct. 24, 1923. Clay, porcelain, and like plastic compositions.- In producing ceramic ware by partially converting the clay into a cement by the addition of carbonate of lime, fluoride compounds soluble in water are usually added to start the chemical action. According to the present invention, silica is first added to clays in which the reaction with the fluoride is weak. The moulded articles are first air dried and then baked at a low heat, for example under 1000‹ C. Suitable proportions may be 30 per cent alumina, 5 per cent sodium fluoride, 60 per cent quartz, and about 5 per cent carbonate of lime. Higher percentages of fluoride produce a non-separable glazed surface; by adding calcium salts to the charge, the complete vitrification of the baked product by the fluoride is prevented and the clay bakes white and free from iron spots.
