Abstract
A body composition for the production of refractory and ceramic articles comprises a mixture of a natural or artificial hydrated magnesium silicate free from alkali, not more than 10 per cent of alkali-free alkaline earth compounds and alumina. Graphite may be added as a filler. The composition is moulded and fired. Suitable natural silicates are serpentine, chlorite, soapstone, talc and steatite. In an example 90 parts of iron-free soapstone, 7,5 parts of barium carbonate and 2,5 parts of alumina are finely ground, moulded, dried and burnt at Seger cone 14. In another example 80 parts of graphite are mixed with 20 parts of the composition of the preceding example. The material may be used for the production of tubes, vessels, &c. for acids and other chemicals, building blocks, &c., crucibles, stills, emery and polishing wheels, &c.
