Abstract

107,640. Cowles, A. H. July 4, 1916. Alkalies, obtaining from silicates.-A furnace charge comprising silicates such as feldspar, lencite, zeolites, clay, &c. or artificial alkali-aluminium silicates with an alkaline earth compound such as lime, calcium carbonate, or calcium chloride and, if necessary an alkali such as sodium carbonate is made up in such a manner that, after sintering, there shall be present two' molecules of alkaline earth oxide to each molecule of silica and less than two but preferably more than one molecules of alkali oxide to each molecule of alumina. The sintered product may be used as a fertilizer or may be leached with water or, if the proportion of alkali is low, with a solution of caustic alkali or alkali aluminate high in alkali. The solution thus obtained is sodium aluminate suitable for treatment by the Bayer process. An artificial silicate for use in the furnace charge may be prepared by heating a mixture of clay, calcium chloride, and carbon at 1500-2000‹ F., steam being blown over or through the mixture, a large surface of which is exposed. The product may contain one or more molecules of calcium oxide and two or more molecules of silica to one molecule of alumina. Another artificial silicate, the preparation of which is not described, has the composition 1.4 Na2O, 2SiO2, Al2O3. Specifications 10093/87, 5296/92, and 20220/02, are referred to.
