Abstract

Porous ceramic material is formed by burning aluminium or magnesium silicate with either refractory oxides or a substance which gives off a gag during the burning operation. Another material which becomes porous when burnt at a temperature of 1400 DEG C. comprises 50 parts by weight of precipitated SiO2 having a water content of from 80 to 85 per cent, 42 parts of quartz glass powder, 5 parts of plastic clay and 3 parts of calcium carbonate.
