Abstract

725,318. Moulding processes. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Feb. 20, 1953 [March 11, 1952], No. 4858/53. Class 83 (1). In a method of preparing a mould containing a layer of refractory mixed with a silicic acid sol binder, the said layer is treated with a hygroscopic medium for withdrawing water therefrom before the application of a second mould layer. As applied to a mould for precision casting, a wax pattern is coated with quartz flour bound with a silicic acid sol, and the coated pattern immersed in high concentration alcohol for at least one minute until the required amount of water has been withdrawn, such that the capacity of the binder for absorbing more water disappears. A mass of moist coarser grained moulding material which may include an inorganic acid as a binder is then applied, without its water content affecting the silicic acid sol of the layer. The mould is then dried and fired.
