Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A foundry moulding process comprises forming a mould around an expendable pattern with a moulding material containing a granular refractory and an organic substance active as a first binder, at least partially destroying the pattern, subjecting the mould to a firing treatment to carbonize the first binder, and then impregnating the mould with a liquid which contains or is constituted by a material which can act as a second binder for the mould or be subsequently converted into the same. Refractories referred to are mullite, sillimanite and quartz sand. The first binder may be epoxy resin, e.g. in acetone with hardener and accelerator, polystyrene in benzene, self-curing oils with conjugate double bonds such as Chinese wood oil, and the second binder may be methyl silicate, aqueous silicic acid, metallic salts, e.g. of Ti, Al, Zr, Si, from which a metallic hydroxide is precipitated under the action of an acid, and aqueous solutions of phosphoric or boric acid. The binder may be hardened by CO 2 gas.
