Abstract

1,132,361. Casting processes. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 19 Dec., 1966 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 2116/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] A metal casting is made by pouring molten metal into a ceramic shell mould, the casting and shell then being allowed to cool while surrounded by particulate active carbon. The metal may be poured into a mould surrounded by the C. The C may have specific surface area of at least 500 m<SP>2</SP>g<SP>-1</SP>, residual volatile content of not more than 5% wt, and particle size 30-200 B.S.S. The C may be produced by carbonization and activation of bone, wood, peat, or nut shells, e.g. coconut shells. The C may be fluidized durring immersion of the shell. The C may be a component of a mixture with one or more particulate refractory solids, the C forming at least 5% wt; refractory solids may be e.g. molochite, zircon sand, or metal ball-shot. The shell mould may be produced conventionally, e.g. using coatings of powdered refractory, e.g. sillimanite, in a liquid binding agent derived from ethyl silicate, with intermediate stucco layers. The mould is preferably immersed in the C immediately on withdrawal from the firing furnace, and the metal poured in without delay. The C combines with O 2 in the vicinity of the mould, thus preventing access of O 2 to the metal. The metal may be low-carbon steel, low-alloy steel, or high-carbon, high-alloy steel.
