Abstract

1,184,908. Casting processes. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 23 Aug., 1968 [20 Sept., 1967], No. 42787/67. Addition to 1,132,361. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] An assembly comprising a ceramic shellmould surrounded by particulate active carbon is heated to initiate combustion of the carbon, metal is cast while the assembly is still hot, and the casting and assembly are allowed to cool to a temperature at which exposure to the atmosphere does not have an adverse effect on the casting, after which the mould is withdrawn from the surrounding carbon. The assembly may be heated at the same temperature, e.g. 950- 1100‹ C, and using the same furnace, as for the firing during production of the mould. The carbon may be produced by pyrolysis of coconut shells, and may have specific surface area 500-1600 m<SP>2</SP>g<SP>-1</SP>; the particle size may be - 30 + 150 BSS mesh. The mould may be made by the lost-wax process from a slurry of sillimanite - 200 mesh in hydrolyzed ethyl silicate solution and a sillimanite stucco - 40+80 mesh. The metal may be a low alloy, plain carbon, or ferritic or martensitic stainless steel. Oxidation defects, e.g. pitting or decarburization, of the casting surface are prevented. To counteract the insulating effect of the assembly, the carbon may be mixed with an inert diluent of higher conductively or it may be fluidized using a cold, inert gas, e.g. CO 2 ; or metal and mould temperatures during operation may be lower than is conventional.
