Abstract

Modifying or conditioning additives for molten light metals and alloys are formed into blocks which either remain coherent in the molten metal or consist wholly of material which is converted to gas in the molten metal, each block having an aperture through which is securely fastened a sinker of high specific gravity such that the specific gravity of the sinker and additive is greater than that of the molten metal. The sinker may consist of a bolt with a locking nut, or may consist of a curved bar, with or without a stop at one end, the curvature being such that the sinker is retained in place by the pressure of the molten metal. The sinker may be made of cast iron, alloy iron or steel coated with refractory, refractory enamel or graphite, or may be made of tungsten carbide or bonded zircon sand. The block preferably contains, in addition to the active ingredient, a substance which will sinter at the temperature of the molten metal to prevent the block from breaking up. Substances mentioned are common salt, fluorspar, magnesia, or crushed firebrick, optionally with a binding agent, e.g. a silicate. Specification 827,619 is referred to.
