Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the sulfurization near the surfaces of cast steel castings and to suppress the occurrence of defects such as high temp. crackings by coating a mold coating material consisting basically of a sulfur affinity material on the surfaces of an org. self-hardening mold thence coating a conventional mold coating material.
CONSTITUTION: A mold coating material for preventing sulfurization consisting basically of a material such as active manganese oxide which has high affinity to sulfur on the surfaces of an org. self-hardening mold such as furan mold. Further, a conventional mold coating material is coated on the interface part in contact with molten metal. Thereby, the sulfur content in the gas produced when molten metal is charged into the cavity of the mold is absorbed in the sulfur affinity material in the mold coating material for preventing sulfurization. This coating material percolates into the spaces among the sand grains in the surfces of the mold thereby preventing or decreasing the sulfurization phenomena near the molding surfaces.
