Abstract

1,107,454. Refractory bricks. SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS AKTIEBOLAG. 18 June, 1965 [22 June, 1964; 18 Sept., 1964], No. 25890/65. Heading F4B. [Also in Division B3] A bottom brick or plug for an ingot mould has at least the part which comes into contact with the cast metal formed with a consolidated and smooth surface having a composition which comprises a fine grained refractory material and 0À5 to 8% (preferably 1-3%) by weight of an organic binder. The average grain size of the refractory material is 0À01 to 1À0 mm. and preferably 0À05 to 0À6 mm. The refractory material can be acid, basic or metal and may include one or more of materials such as natural sand, quartz dolomite and olivine. The organic binder is preferably a resin glue or a synthetic resin. Furan resin glue with a hardener, e.g. phosphoric acid has been found particularly suitable. In alternative embodiments the brick may be formed in two layers, a thin top layer 13 formed of zirconium sand or oxides of the metals Zi, Mg, Al, Cr and a supporting layer 14 of refractory material such as olivine or quartzite. The bricks may also have a metal sheet 21, Fig. 3, secured thereto to improve resistance to erosion.
