Abstract

1444280 Foundry moulds SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 22 Aug 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39788/73 Heading C3N A process for the preparation of a mould or core comprises hardening a shaped mixture containing sand, an organic binder, and powdered precipitation bitumen. The powdered precipitation bitumen may be present in an amount 0À5-10% by weight and preferably has a grain size less than 1 mm. (e.g. 0À25 mm.). The precipitation bitumen is preferably a propane bitumen. The "organic binder" is defined as a compound which can be made to react (i.e. harden) to form high-molecular compounds, e.g. furfuryl alcohol-urea-formaldehyde resins, furfuryl alcohol-phenol-formaldehyde resins, epoxy resins and furfuryl alcohol-urea-formaldehyde resins. Such preferred binders suitably contain 50-95 % by weight furfuryl alcohol. Hardening may be effected by heating or by use of an acid, e.g. p-toluene sulphonic acid or phosphoric acid. The sand may be chromite, zirconia, olivine or preferably quartz. A silane may be added to improve the bonding of the resin to the sand. The mould or core produced may be provided with a coating, e.g. a suspension in isopropyl alcohol of zirconia, coal dust, coke or powdered graphite. The suspension may also contain starch or clay.
