Abstract

1434344 Foundry patterns A H QURAISHI 13 April 1973 [26 April 1972] 19331/72 Heading B3F A pattern 1, e.g. of a camshaft, and possibly including runners and risers, has an interior surface defining a totally enclosed space substantially devoid of solid material and forming a single cavity or being divided to form a number of cavities 3; it is embedded in a sand mixture in a moulding box and molten material is poured into the box so that the pattern is contacted and burnt or vaporized to be replaced by the molten material which thereby enters the space. The pattern may be made from separate pieces, machined from a block, produced by injection moulding or be the product of rotational moulding as claimed in Specification 1,434,345 (see Division B5). The cavities may be linked by passageways. A comprehensive list of materials for making the pattern is given. Apart from expanded polystyrene and polyurethane, elastomers, alkyds, silicones, other polymers, resins, gum pitch, tar and wax are included. They may be reinforced by sandwich and lay-up moulding techniques, by films, paper, cardboard or volatile fillers and may be overcoated and incorporate chills and cores externally or within the pattern body structure.
