Abstract
1391638 Ingot mould stools NIPPON CRUCIBLE CO Ltd 14 Dec 1972 57706/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division C3] The cast-iron stool 3 of a cast-iron ingot mould 2 is provided with a recess 4 in which is placed an insert 5 composed of a carbon-bonded silicon carbide/graphite refractory material. The refractory material may also contain SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , B 2 O 5 , iron oxide and an alkali metal oxide (for further details of the material composition see Division C3). A luting composition is used to join the insert 5 to the stool 3, the composition comprising by weight The luting covers the base of the recess at 7 and fills the gap 6 between insert 5 and stool 3. Annular or helical grooves 8, 9 filled with luting may be provided in the insert 5 and in the recess 4. As shown the upper surface of the insert 5 is depressed 30-50 mm. compared with that of the stool 3. When casting ingots of 10 tons or more 15-40% of the mould cavity bottom area is formed by the insert. With smaller ingots the insert 5 may form all the mould cavity bottom area.
