Abstract
1,123,578. Hot tops. SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS A.B. 2 Nov., 1965 [3 Nov., 1964], No. 46451/65. Heading B3F. A hot top for an ingot mould comprises two layers of refractory and organic material bonded together, the main constituent of each layer being a fine grained refractory material, the inner layer being more compacted and having a smaller average grain size than the outer layer. Each layer contains 1-10% by weight of binder, up to 10% of organic material and up to 10% of refractory fibrous material, the outer layer being of partly or wholly porous material such as slag or diatomaceous earth (kieselguhr). The refractory material of the outer layer may also include limestone and/or dolomite or sand, or alkalinic compounds and/or silicates. The inner layer comprises such materials as quartz, silicates, Al 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 and/or refractory alkalinic compounds. The outer layer may contain a minor quantity of exothermic material such as Al, Mg and/or Zr. The hot top may be formed as a unitary construction or by component slabs 11, 12, 13 and 14 which are held in the top of an ingot mould by wedge portions 15, 16, 17 and 18.
