Abstract
1,230,471. Casting processes. FOSECO TRADING A.G. 26 Feb., 1969 [7 March, 1968] No. 11134/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] Horizontal exposed molten metal surfaces are thermally insulated by applying thereto a mat comprising 10 to 20% by weight of a bonded refractory fibrous material. The preferred slab composition is refractory fibrous material .... 10-15% organic fibrous material ...0-20% binder ..... 1-20% particulate refractory filler .. balance. The slabs are manufactured by vacuum dewatering of a slurry composition followed by stoving to drive off remaining water. The slabs can be used to cover molten metal in ingot moulds after a layer of anti-piping compound has been spread on the metal surface. If desired a layer of exothermic compound can be coated on one side of the slab. The slabs can also be used for heat insulating molten metal in the tundishes of continuous casting machines.
