Abstract

1415150 Magnesium-containing additive MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd 16 Nov 1972 16383/75 Divided out of 1414624 Heading C7D A granular additive for desulphurizing or spheroidizing iron melts consists of Mg (including Mg-based alloys, e.g. Mg-Ce) particles coated with a refractory material which forms a stable metalpermeable matrix around the Mg particles when added to the melt. The refractory material may be C, an organic material which decomposes to form a carbonaceous coating, metal oxide, e.g. MgO, Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , a mixture of oxides, or an oxide complex, e.g. vermiculite, and is applied by spraying Mg particles in a fluidized bed. The additive may include up to 4% of a binder selected from phenolic resins, epoxy resins and polysacchorides, and a fluoride, e.g. CaF 2 .
