Abstract

1414624 Magnesium containing additives for ferrous melts MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd 16 Nov 1972 [17 Nov 1971 (2) 13 Oct 1972 (2)] 53409/71 53410/71, 47350/72 and 47352/72 Heading C7D A Mg-containing additive for ferrous melts (e.g. S.G. iron, malleable iron) comprises a tablet or briquette of Mg or Mg-based alloy (e.g. Mg-Ce) and particles, CaF 2 particles, and particles of a material inert to Mg at its melting point, such that at the temperature of the ferrous melt the material forms a stable metal-permeable matrix around the Mg particles. Preferred materials are carbonaceous materials, and metal oxides, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , MgO and vermiculite. A binder selected from phenolic resins, epoxy resins and polysaccharides may be included. CaF 2 may be partially replaced by fluorides of Mg, alkaline earth and rare earth metals, or zirconium double fluorides. Other carrier materials, e.g. CaO, Fe powder, may also be present. Chromium sesquioxide may be added to the binder to strengthen the briquettes.
