Abstract
1517324 Desulphurization of steel SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 Sept 1975 38623/75 Heading C7D Molten steel is desulphurized by contact in a ladle with a granular slag-forming agent comprising 45 - 70 wt. per cent CaO, 10-30% Al 2 O 3 and 3-14% CaF 2 in amount 0.2 to 4% based on the molten steel, the slag-forming agent containing < 10% MgO, < 7% SiO 2 , < 3% FeO and < 0.2% P 2 O 5 . The granule size is between 0.3 and 25 mm; the agent may be made as a mixed powder; in this case the granule size may be 1-2 mm; or as a bound mixture, made by firing at 800-1300C in a rotary mixer the above ingredients plus Na silicate, Methyl silicate or silica sol as binder, or alternatively the ingredients may be melted together and subsequently pelletized; the "bound" or "melted" pellets have size 20-25 mm; cube briquettes of this size may also be provided. Where FeO content of the agent is high, or where Fe oxide slips into the ladle from the converter slag during pouring the steel, up to 0.4% Al or up to 0.3% Ca (based on the steel) may be added either to the ladle as alloy granules or to the slag as a reducing agent; where the melting rate of the agent is low, an "exothermic" agent may be used - a mixture of 24-29% Al + 76.71% Fe ore is added thereto, so that on reaction, Fe ore is reduced to Fe, Al 2 O 3 is produced to provide part of the above-stated amount, and Al is left in excess to reduce any FeO. Where ultra-low S steel is required, the treatment may be followed by inert gas agitation in vacuo, e.g. with Ar.
