Abstract

1379654 Treatment of molten metals FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 30 April 1973 [8 May 1972] 21408/72 Heading C7D A composition comprising a body of alkali metal (e.g. sodium, potassium or lithium), alkaline earth metal (e.g. calcium or barium) or magnesium or alloy of any of these, surrounded by an inner coating of a non-water containing water-vapour impermeable material and at least substantially surrounded by an outer coating of refractory material is used in the treatment of molten metal. The inner coating may consist of aluminium, steel, copper, P.T.F.E. or silicone resin and the outer coating may be of non-uniform thickness and may consist of phosphate bonded calcined magnesite, alumina or dolomite. The composition may be prepared by casting the molten treatment metal into an elongate cylinder of inner coating material which is subsequently coated with refractory material and may be added to molten copper, light alloys, steel or nickel to remove hydrogen and sulphur therefrom.
