Abstract

1373354 Treating molten metal FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 6 July 1972 [20 July 1971 (2)] 34035/71 and 34036/71 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Molten metal is treated with a body of alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or alloys of these, the treating agent being wholly or partially surrounded by porous bonded carbon, preferably crushed metallurgical coke. As illustrated a magnesium disc 6 may be located in a well in the base of ladle 1 and covered by a bonded coke disc 5 supported on refractory ring 7, the well being closed by removable cap 3. Alternatively a coke cylinder 11 having a bore to fit on a plunger rod has magnesium 13 cast into it and enclosed by refractory cement 14.
