Abstract

1354822 Foundry moulding processes A AHLSTROM OSAKEYHTIO 17 Jan 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 2110/72 Heading B3F Foundry sand moulds having at least a facing of sodium silicate-containing sand are hardened by providing sodium silicate-containing sand with a dressing which is combustible to form CO 2 , moulding the sand and kindling the dressing. The gases formed by combustion are then passed through the formed mould to harden it. As shown, a flask 2 contains backing sand 3 and sodium silicate-containing facing sand 1 dressed with an alcohol-containing dressing. Vents 10 are provided in the sand and the flask 2 rests by insulation 5 on an air-tight cover 4 connected to a vacuum pump 7. The alcohol is kindled and hot-air and combustion gases containing CO 2 sucked through the mould by the vacuum pump 7 as shown by the arrows.
