Abstract
1358241 Casting moulds containing polystyrene as binder INSTYTUT ODLEWNICTWA 5 June 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 26103/72 Heading C3N A method of producing a casting mould comprises shaping a moulding composition comprising sand and a solution of polystyrene as binder for the sand, and treating the shaped composition with a pressurized gas to harden the binder. The gas, which may be air or other non-toxic gas, may be at a pressure of 0À2-6 atmospheres and the treatment is preferably for at least 5 sees. The polystyrene solution may be of 10-90% by weight concentration and it may be used in an amount 1-10 parts by weight per 100 parts of the sand. The sand is preferably quartz and the composition may also include kerosene.
