Abstract

Foundry moulds in which a moulding material is shaped against a model in a moulding box are made by forming a porous esp. sponge iron support and injecting a sand esp. chromite, zircon or olivine cont'g. a heat-destroyed binder e.g. a furane between the support and the model, partic. so that the surface of the mould nearest the model is almost entirely sand. Before injection the support is pref. heated to a temp. at which the binder hardens. Sand occupies 10-50% of the total volume of mould material.
