Abstract

1,027,419. Mould and core materials. HARBISON WALKER REFRACTORIES CO. Nov. 3, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1963], No. 44769/64. Heading B3F. [Also in Division B5] In an investment casting process wherein the gelable slurry consists of a particulate refractory and an alcohol and alkyl silicate binder, the slurry is allowed to gel until self-supporting, the mould is removed from the pattern and is then placed in a rigid container or an impervious envelope to form an alcohol-rich atmosphere, the mould being kept in the atmosphere until it develops sufficient strength to resist cracking. The slurry may consist of a particulate refractory coated with an organic base containing from 4-22 carbon atoms or an alkali or alkali metal salt thereof and a lower alkyl silicate binder dissolved in an alcohol, the binder being capable of reacting with the base or its salt to cause gelation.
