Abstract
A synthetic "modified satin white" pigment has the composition <FORM:1115482/C4-C5/1> where x is 4-7, y is 2-4, but x > y, z is 0.1-3, preferably 0.3-1, and n is 5-22. It is produced by reacting milk of lime and aluminium sulphate to produce mCaO.Al2O3.ySO3.nH2O, where y < m < x and treating, while moist, with at least one of (a) "active" silica and, if desired, CaO, (b) CaCl2 solution and an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution (c) freshly precipitated, undried calcium silicate filler which is amorphous to X-rays and of composition CaO.2-5SiO2.nH2O and separating, washing and drying the product. The dispersibility can be improved by adding to the filter cake before or after drying, small amounts (0.01-5% by wt.) of components such as detergents or emulsifiers, e.g. long-chain fatty acids or their corresponding esters, polyols, phosphoric acid esters or amines, which can be applied, if liquid, in aqueous or organic solution or if solid, to the suspended filter cake, or sprayed after dissolution in a solvent on to the still wet or dried filter cake, preferably during grinding. The product may be treated with water vapour so that not more than 22 molecules of water are taken up per molecule of pigment and this rehydrated and recrystallized product has greatly improved dispersibility.ALSO:A synthetic "modified satin white" pigment has the composition XCaO.Al2O3.ySo3.zSiO2. nH2O, where X is 4-7, y is 2-4, but X > y, z is 0.1-3, preferably 0.3-1 and n is 5-22. It is produced by reacting milk of lime and aluminium sulphate to produce mCaO.Al2O3.ySO3. nH2O, where y < m \sE x, e.g. of composition 1.5-3 CaO.Al2O3.3CaSO4, similar to the ore ettringite, and treating this while moist with at least one of (a) "active" silica and, if desired, CaO; (b) CaCl2 solution and an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution; (c) freshly precipitated, undried calcium silicate filler which is amorphous to X-rays, and of composition CaO.2-5 SiO2.nH2O, separating and washing the product and drying it e.g. in a turbulent stream of unreacting, hot gas. It may then be treated with water vapour so that not more than 22 molecules of water are taken up per molecule of pigment.
