Abstract

Colloidal size particles of a -alumina monohydrate of boeharite structure and which contain only trace amounts of inorganic impurities are obtained by hydrolysis, with water of an aluminium alcoholate followed by contacting the resultant alumina with at least one weight per cent based on the alumina of an acid (e.g. acetic) for 1 minute to 8 hours. The alumina may be separated from at least a portion of the alcohol resulting from hydrolysis before acid contacting. The alcoholate may be prepared by oxidation of an aluminium alkyl having a C2 to C10 alkyl group. The aluminium alcoholate may be hydrolysed in the presence of water and an organic solvent of low solubility in water (e.g. butanol); in this way an aqueous phase containing alumina may be separated from the alcohol hydrolysis product. Heating at 150-300 DEG for 1 minute to 8 hours may be applied at this stage and mechanical agitation (e.g. stirring or ball-milling) may be applied. The aluminia obtained by hydrolysis of the alcoholate may be dried to an alumina content of at least 50 weight per cent before acid treatment. The particles of a -alumina monohydrate may be recovered by spray drying. The particles may be in fibrous form when stirring is applied at the acidification stage and in the form of platelets when ball-milling is used.
