Abstract

Terephthalic acid is recovered from highly polymeric linear esters obtainable by heating glycols with terephthalic acid or an esterforming derivative thereof, by hydrolysing the polyesters by means of strong mineral acids and recovering the terephthalic acid from the hydrolysate. The terephthalic acid may be purified in any known manner, e.g. by dissolution in aqueous alkali followed by reprecipitation with a dilute mineral acid, or by conversion into the methyl ester. Examples are given using the following acids in the hydrolysis: (1) commercial concentrated sulphuric acid at 20-30 DEG C.; (2) boiling dilute sulphuric acid, containing 37, 44 or 50 parts by volume of acid; (3) syrupy phosphoric acid at 120 DEG C., and (4) boiling nitric acid of specific gravity 1.4 or 1.2. The terephthalic acid may be converted to its methyl ester by boiling under reflux with methyl alcohol and concentrated sulphuric acid and separating the crystals of the ester which separate on cooling.
